The Last Loyal Flame: The Tale of Zhào Jīnyàn, the Phoenix General

The Waning Heavens

The Celestial Realm was once a place of boundless radiance, where the will of the immortals shaped the order of existence. Yet, in the Era of the Waning Heavens, fractures ran deep. Once a beacon of divine power, the Celestial Realm found itself locked in an unending struggle against the Devil Realm, a conflict that sapped its strength, its unity, and, for many, its very faith.

Amidst this slow decline stood Zhào Jīnyàn (赵金焰), the Phoenix General, the last guardian of Heaven’s crumbling gates. She was not born of high rank nor favored by celestial politics. Instead, she had forged her reputation in battle, clad in phoenix-forged armor, her golden-red hair blazing like a banner of defiance against the dark tide.

Celestial commanders spoke of duty, of the grand destiny of their kind. Zhào Jīnyàn cared little for such rhetoric. Her devotion was not to the exalted halls of Heaven, but to those who bled for it—the soldiers under her command, the mortals caught in celestial crossfire, the common immortals who lived and died without voices in Heaven’s councils. She had no illusions about Celestial righteousness, but she knew that if they fell, the Devil Realm would consume everything in its path. And so she fought, not for Heaven’s pride, but for its survival.

A Warrior’s Unyielding Heart

Zhào Jīnyàn was many things—a war general, a protector, a woman bound to her duty like a flame to a wick. She carried herself with a presence both regal and destructive. When she walked, the embers of her power left a trail behind her, ghostly remnants of the phoenix fire that burned within.

Despite her status, she was no blind zealot. Celestial commanders, long insulated from war, made decisions that disregarded the lives of soldiers and mortals alike. The war had lasted for millennia, and their desperation led them to dark strategies—sacrificing entire towns for a temporary reprieve, retreating when victory was within grasp, abandoning strongholds to maintain appearances of celestial dominion.

Zhào Jīnyàn had never hesitated to defy them.

When a council of elders ordered the execution of a mortal city to prevent its capture, she led her army against them instead. When the decree to abandon the warfront came, she stayed, burning an entire Devil fortress to the ground with her spear, Lìhuǒ Tiānjūn (烈火天军, Blazing Heaven Spear). The spear’s flames could consume even immortal souls, reducing devils to ash. It was a weapon of absolute destruction, but in her hands, it became a guardian’s blade.

Her defiance earned her enemies within her own ranks, but it also earned her a legend. Among mortals, she was whispered of as a goddess of war, a divine protector whose flames shielded those abandoned by Heaven itself.

Yet, she knew the truth.

Heaven was failing.

The Last Line of Defense

With every battle fought, every fortress burned, every fallen soldier, Zhào Jīnyàn found herself questioning whether the Celestial Realm even deserved to be saved. The corruption of its rulers, the arrogance of its elders, the callousness with which they discarded lives—it gnawed at her resolve. She could feel her faith slipping like sand through her fingers.

And still, she fought.

Because what was the alternative? To let the Devil Realm swallow the remnants of the world? To watch mortals and weaker immortals be devoured by darkness? To simply walk away?

She was not yet ready for that.

But the day might come when she would be.

Scene: The Battle of Ashen Hollow

Zhào Jīnyàn stood at the edge of the ruined valley, her golden-red hair whipping in the wind, her phoenix armor smeared with blood—some celestial, some devilish. Below her, the remnants of the Celestial forces struggled against an overwhelming tide of Devils, their fangs bared, their blackened claws tearing through divine flesh. Heaven’s warriors were breaking.

She tightened her grip on Lìhuǒ Tiānjūn, its divine flames licking at her gauntlet but never burning her. The air was thick with the scent of charred flesh, and the screams of the dying merged into an unholy symphony of war.

Her second-in-command, Yún Léi, staggered to her side, blood seeping through the cracks in his armor. “General… they’re calling a retreat.”

She did not move. Did not blink. “And do you agree with them?”

Yún Léi hesitated, then clenched his fists. “No. But they’ll pull rank if you don’t order it yourself.”

Her laugh was bitter, a dry ember in the howling storm. “They will try.”

Zhào Jīnyàn strode forward, raising her spear high. The flames brightened, casting an eerie glow over the battlefield.

“To me!” she commanded, her voice carrying over the chaos. “Stand your ground! Heaven does not fall today!”

Her soldiers hesitated for only a breath before rallying. They had fought beside her long enough to know—when the Phoenix General made a stand, the battle was not yet lost.

With a cry, she plunged into the fray, her spear igniting like a falling star. The first devil to meet her charge disintegrated, its howls swallowed by the firestorm that erupted in her wake. One by one, the enemy fell before her, their bodies reduced to embers, their shrieks of agony lost beneath the roar of her flames.

Somewhere in the distance, she heard the retreat horns blaring.

She did not answer them.

The Flickering Future

As long as Zhào Jīnyàn stood, the Celestial Realm still had a guardian. But for how long? How many more betrayals, how many more lost battles, how many more sacrifices would it take before even she abandoned the cause?

The Celestials called her “The Last Flame,” the final bastion of their glory. But what they feared most was not her fall in battle—it was the day she would finally walk away.

For when the Phoenix General’s fire extinguished, so too would the last hope of Heaven.

Zhào Jīnyàn is more than just a warrior—she is a symbol, a legend, a flame that refuses to die. But even the brightest flames can burn out. The only question is: when?
