About Me
Hi, I am Gillian, an Australian, living and working in the Midlands of the UK. I have always been hooked on fantasy genres, and have been writing my own short stories since I was a teen. My discovery of the entire Chinese family of fantasy genres, including Wuxia, Xianxia, and Xuanhuan has led me to create this site. I hope you enjoy exploring this world as much as I do!

Welcome to the Transcending Boundaries series, where we explore how the same character archetype is interpreted across three popular Chinese fantasy genres: Wuxia, Xianxia, and Xuanhuan. This series aims to highlight how the rules, aesthetics, and core themes of each genre shape a character’s journey in vastly different ways, even when the core personality and motivations remain the same.
In this post, we’ll be looking at Bái Lìxue (白立雪) – “White Snow of Virtue”, a betrayed noblewoman driven by a thirst for justice and a determination to reclaim her honour. While her story begins with the same betrayal and quest for redemption, how she approaches her journey and the forces that shape her path will be defined by the genre she inhabits.
The key questions: How does this character’s journey differ depending on whether she’s operating in the world of martial heroes (Wuxia storytelling), immortal cultivators (Xianxia storytelling), or realms of fantastical logic (Xuanhuan storytelling)? How much is her core personality altered by the rules of each genre? And what storytelling possibilities does each approach present? Let’s dive in.
Name: Bái Lìxue (白立雪) – “White Snow of Virtue”
Background: The youngest daughter of a prestigious noble family renowned for its martial prowess and elegance. Her father was a revered general known for his battlefield strategy and unwavering honour, while her mother, an accomplished martial artist herself, trained Bái Lìxue in the subtle arts of combat and intrigue. But ambition and treachery from within her own family led to her betrayal. Framed for a crime she did not commit, Bái Lìxue was exiled, her name sullied and her honour destroyed. Left to die in the wilderness, her survival and eventual rise from the ashes become the cornerstone of her story.
Personality: Proud, intelligent, and determined. Bái Lìxue is fiercely ambitious and refuses to let her enemies dictate her fate. Her compassion is tempered by ruthlessness when needed, and her adaptability allows her to thrive where others would perish. As her journey progresses, her quest for revenge becomes tempered by a desire for justice and the reclamation of her true self.
Core Motivation: To reclaim her honour, restore her family’s legacy, and destroy those who betrayed her.
In a Wuxia setting, Bái Lìxue is a master of a rare and graceful martial arts style known as the Snow Orchid Technique, a form that emphasizes fluidity, precision, and the harnessing of internal energy. Her betrayal was orchestrated by an elder brother who saw her as a rival for their family’s legacy.
Cast out from the safety of her family, Bái Lìxue becomes a wandering heroine within the Jianghu. Her elegance and formidable combat skills earn her both allies and enemies, and her sharp intellect allows her to manoeuvre through the complex web of martial sects, alliances, and hidden agendas. As she grows in skill and understanding, she must decide whether revenge is truly what she desires, or if her destiny lies beyond the cycle of vengeance.
Key Themes: Honour, personal growth, redemption, justice, power dynamics, and philosophical struggle.
In a Xianxia setting, Bái Lìxue’s betrayal is intertwined with spiritual cultivation. During a critical ceremony meant to unlock her latent abilities, her meridians are deliberately damaged through a cursed artifact, leaving her spiritually crippled. Her family’s elders dismiss her as a failure and cast her aside, claiming her cultivation path is forever sealed.
In her desperation, Bái Lìxue discovers an ancient cultivation method known as the Path of the Frozen Lotus, allowing her to channel the cold energy of the world into formidable power. But the technique’s power comes at a cost: it erodes her emotions, threatening to turn her into a being of ice and vengeance.
As she delves deeper into the forbidden art, she struggles against the darkness threatening to consume her, all while plotting revenge against those who destroyed her life. Her journey explores the tension between maintaining her humanity and embracing the icy power that grants her strength.
Key Themes: Power, transcendence, moral struggle, corruption, forbidden techniques, spiritual cultivation.
In a Xuanhuan setting, Bái Lìxue is not only betrayed by her family but also by the kingdom she once sought to protect. As the rightful heir to a noble house with mystical ties to ancient elemental forces, she is accused of consorting with dark powers to eliminate political rivals.
Cast into exile, Bái Lìxue uncovers a prophecy that suggests her downfall was orchestrated by forces seeking to manipulate her power for their own gain. Her journey involves mastering the elemental arts tied to her bloodline, reclaiming her title, and unravelling the conspiracy that nearly destroyed her.
Along the way, she forms alliances with powerful beings, navigates the complexities of a fractured kingdom, and discovers that her destiny is far greater than personal vengeance. Her story becomes a battle between destiny and free will, as she struggles to reclaim her legacy and restore balance to her world.
Key Themes: Political intrigue, mystical arts, destiny, power struggles, cosmic forces.
The character of Bái Lìxue presents a compelling example of how the same core motivation—seeking justice and reclaiming her honour—can be adapted to fit the vastly different storytelling demands of Wuxia, Xianxia, and Xuanhuan. While her fundamental drive remains constant, her methods, obstacles, and personal growth are heavily influenced by the genre in which her story is told.
In Wuxia, Bái Lìxue’s journey is deeply personal, grounded in themes of honour, personal growth, and the complexities of the Jianghu. Her mastery of the Snow Orchid Technique allows her to navigate the martial world with elegance and precision. Yet, the true challenge she faces is not her enemies but her own sense of justice and how to achieve it without compromising her values. Her growth comes from the alliances she forms, the philosophies she encounters, and her willingness to embrace compassion even in the face of betrayal. The emphasis is on her evolution from a wounded, vengeful outcast to a wise and tempered heroine.
In Xianxia, her path is more mystical and perilous. Betrayed at the most vulnerable moment of her cultivation journey, Bái Lìxue’s struggle becomes a fight against both external enemies and internal corruption. The Path of the Frozen Lotus she adopts is a powerful but dangerous technique that constantly threatens her humanity. Her quest for revenge is intertwined with her battle against the technique’s cold and unfeeling nature, creating a thematic conflict between power and emotion. In this setting, her journey is one of transcendence and transformation, where her success depends not only on her cultivation strength but on her ability to reconcile her icy powers with her emotional and moral core.
In Xuanhuan, her struggle becomes part of a larger, world-spanning conflict. The betrayal that cast her out was orchestrated by factions seeking to exploit her connection to ancient elemental forces. Her journey involves mastering those powers and reclaiming her legacy, but also uncovering the conspiracy that brought her downfall. As she forges alliances, navigates political intrigue, and battles powerful enemies, her quest for justice expands beyond personal revenge. It becomes a fight to restore balance to a world threatened by cosmic forces and political machinations. Her journey is a balance between destiny and free will, as she strives to create her own fate despite the powerful forces seeking to control her.
Thematically, the differences between the genres are stark. Wuxia is grounded in interpersonal conflict, honour, and philosophical growth. Xianxia transforms the struggle into one of cultivation, transcendence, and personal corruption. Xuanhuan amplifies the stakes, turning her story into a battle of political intrigue, mystical power, and cosmic destiny.
Ultimately, Bái Lìxue’s story demonstrates how the same character can be reshaped by the genre’s conventions, with her motivation for justice and redemption taking on different meanings depending on the world she inhabits. Whether she emerges as a wise martial heroine, a powerful cultivator wrestling with darkness, or a fated ruler battling against destiny, her journey remains captivating and complex.
| Aspect | Wuxia | Xianxia | Xuanhuan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motivation | Reclaim honour through martial skill and personal growth. | Reclaim strength and power through cultivation, battling corruption. | Reclaim legacy and power through political intrigue and cosmic forces. |
| Conflict | Honour vs. Vengeance | Power vs. Humanity | Destiny vs. Free Will |
| Power Source | Martial skill, internal energy | Spiritual cultivation, forbidden techniques | Elemental arts, mystical prophecy |
| Allies and Enemies | Martial artists, mentors, and rivals within the Jianghu. | Cultivation sects, demons, celestial beings. | Political factions, mystical beings, cosmic forces. |
| Thematic Focus | Personal growth, morality, justice. | Transcendence, corruption, power struggle. | Destiny, power balance, political intrigue. |
Bái Lìxue’s journey across Wuxia, Xianxia, and Xuanhuan offers a striking example of how genre conventions shape character development. While her core motivation—to reclaim her honour and destroy those who betrayed her—remains the same, the nature of her struggle and the themes she embodies differ dramatically depending on the genre.
In Wuxia, her journey focuses on the human experience, examining questions of morality, honour, and redemption through the lens of martial skill and interpersonal conflict. Her interactions with others in the Jianghu force her to reevaluate her motivations and find a path that balances vengeance with justice.
In Xianxia, her story is darker and more introspective. The cultivation journey highlights the dangers of obsession, forbidden techniques, and the struggle between power and humanity. Her path towards power risks eroding her own identity, and her battle against her icy cultivation technique becomes a powerful metaphor for the cost of pursuing revenge at any cost.
In Xuanhuan, her quest becomes part of a grand, sweeping narrative involving mystical forces, political intrigue, and cosmic destiny. Here, her personal motivations are intertwined with a much larger battle for power and balance. Her fight to reclaim her legacy becomes both a personal and universal struggle against forces seeking to manipulate her power for their own ends.
Ultimately, Bái Lìxue’s story illustrates how a single character’s journey can be shaped by the rules and expectations of each genre. Whether her story is grounded in martial codes, mystical cultivation, or epic fantasy, her determination and resilience remain at the core of her character.
