About Me
Hi, I am Gillian, an Australian, living and working in the Midlands of the UK. I have always been hooked on fantasy genres, and have been writing my own short stories since I was a teen. My discovery of the entire Chinese family of fantasy genres, including Wuxia, Xianxia, and Xuanhuan has led me to create this site. I hope you enjoy exploring this world as much as I do!

Welcome, wanderer of realms. You have found the crack in the sky, the hidden pathway between mountains, the slightly suspicious doorway glowing with blue fire. Step through. We do not bite. Well… the demons do, but only recreationally.
Cultivating Dragons is a sanctuary for readers, writers, and glorious nerds who love Chinese fantasy: the sweeping martial arts epics of Wuxia, the immortal cultivation chaos of Xianxia, and the wildly imaginative cosmos of Xuanhuan.
Here you will find stories, lore, deity gossip, realm histories, naming guides, worldbuilding tools, and original fiction from the ever-expanding Mortal Redemption Universe — home to five realms brimming with chaos, beauty, and questionable life choices.
If you are a reader, you will meet characters who shine, brood, battle, seduce, scheme, betray, resurrect themselves, and occasionally turn into dragons for dramatic flair.
If you are a writer, you will find tools that make naming, worldbuilding, and understanding Chinese fantasy ten times easier, with none of the gatekeeping and all of the humour.
And if you arrived here from Pinterest because you saw a very attractive immortal with beautiful hair… honestly, no judgement. That happens a lot.
Settle in. Explore. Ask questions. Stay curious. And if you hear a sword whisper your name, do what everyone else does: pretend you did not hear it and carry on bravely.
Below are the five great realms, each with its own culture, aesthetic, morality, and alarming number of internal political problems. Choose your destination wisely. Or recklessly. I am not your mother.
Radiant. Elegant. Enlightened. Mildly unbearable.
The Celestial Realm is a glittering world of jade palaces, star-lit libraries, divine sects, and powerful immortals who believe they are being extremely reasonable even when they are absolutely not.
Explore cultivation, cosmic bureaucracy, heavenly beasts, divine artefacts, and Celestials whose smiles hide entire catastrophes.
Chaotic. Fiery. Proud. Fun at parties (until the walls catch fire).
Demons celebrate courage, risk, freedom, and doing things simply because someone told them not to. Their cities rise around the Abyss itself: a shifting, unpredictable phenomenon that even demons treat with wary respect.
Meet warrior clans, reckless geniuses, Abyss-taunting children, and demon brides who can take down a warband before breakfast.
Cold. Sophisticated. Seductive. Terrifying without raising their voices.
Devils make contracts the way mortals make excuses. Their winter cities are carved from ice, iron, marble, and pure ambition. Every gift is a bargain. Every gesture hides a consequence. And yes, they are all far too attractive.
Discover their thirteen clans, binding arts, soul-ink calligraphy, and political games so elegant they make Celestials cry into their sleeves.
Gritty. Determined. Endlessly dramatic.
Mortals struggle. They bleed. They get back up. Sometimes they ascend. Sometimes they explode. But the Mortal Realm remains the beating heart of every great Xianxia tale.
Here you will find wandering heroes, rogue sects, mountain monasteries, cursed swords, challenging teachers, hidden destinies, and mortals who refuse to stay dead.
Ancient. Mysterious. Aloof.
From the highest heights of the cosmos, the Divine Realm oversees fate itself. Gods create, destroy, intervene, and occasionally drop the cosmic ball in ways that create centuries of chaos.
Meet divine beasts, primeval artefacts, ancient prophecies, and gods whose silence often says more than their words.
A liminal space, surrounding and separating the Celestial, Demon, and Devil Realms from the Mortal Realm. There are only two pathways for the demi-immortals to reach the mortal Realm – travel through The Shadows Between, and risk insanity or death (although demons consider this a bonus), or through one of the Mortal Redemption Gates, located in each of the demi-immortal realms, and through which those who wish to gain wisdom, maturity, or simply improve their Qi, can undergo reincarnation as mortals. Once their trials are completed, they will also return through this gate.
New to Wuxia, Xianxia, or Xuanhuan? Want the basics without feeling like you have been handed a homework assignment by an immortal with very high standards? Start here.
Immortal cultivation, swords that summon storms, qi that can explode mountains, and characters who live through twenty lifetimes before lunch.
Martial arts heroes, roaming swordsmen, unbreakable loyalty, and dramatic rooftop confrontations.
What Is Xuanhuan?
Wild, imaginative fantasy worlds inspired by Chinese myth, folk tales, Taoism, Buddhism, and cosmic madness.
How Does Cultivation Actually Work?
A clear, friendly guide to meridians, dantians, stages, breakthroughs, realms, bottlenecks, heavenly tribulations, and the very real possibility of exploding yourself by accident.
Your go-to series for naming characters, sects, clans, weapons, artefacts, spirit beasts, cultivation levels, and everything else your story throws at you.
Breakdowns. Examples. Cheatsheets. Cultural context. And absolutely no gatekeeping.
A sweeping mythic project exploring thirteen symbolic moons across all five realms: each moon paired with characters, lore, short fiction, and downloadable posters.
If you like symbolism, lunar mythology, realm perspectives, or printable art, start here.
The heart of everything. Explore the five realms, the cosmology, the calendar system, the clans, the characters, the Abyss, divine prophecies, and a universe built one chaotic brick at a time.
Tropes, tips, worldbuilding strategies, how to write fights, how to write immortals, how to worldbuild like a universe designer, and how to write Xianxia with cultural respect rather than guesswork.
Original Xianxia, Wuxia, and Xuanhuan stories from the Mortal Redemption Universe, including character vignettes, flash fiction, tragic romances, and the occasional unexpected resurrection.
Perfect for fans who binge dramas and want the behind-the-scenes storytelling breakdowns: tropes, worldbuilding, cultural notes, and narrative craft.
One-quarter of everything and wholly mysterious. She guards the Shadow Path between realms, accepts Devil trinkets as tribute, and terrifies Celestials without even trying.
Dragon Clan noble. Beautiful, dangerous, and emotionally unavailable in eight different ways. Writes contracts that can freeze your soul.
A Blade Clan enforcer whose sword strikes only those the universe has already judged guilty. Philosophical. Deadly. Alarmingly calm.
A Shadow Clan operative known for making problems vanish, preferably without witnesses or paperwork.
I’m Gillian: an Australian dietitian living in the UK, a Chinese fantasy enthusiast, and a writer who absolutely refuses to do anything halfway. Cultivating Dragons began as a small blog about C-dramas and quickly mutated into a sprawling five-realm universe featuring demons, devils, Celestials, worldbuilding guides, lunar symbolism, naming science, and about a hundred characters who wandered in uninvited.
I write for readers who love magic, meaning, mythology, and characters with depth, and for writers who want tools that are practical, culturally respectful, and occasionally wickedly funny.
If you love Chinese fantasy, if you have ever sworn at a cultivation level chart, or if you simply want a place where dragons and spreadsheets coexist in harmony, you are in the right place.
Stay as long as you like. Wander the realms. Explore the lore. Read the stories. The gates are always open, the fires always lit, and the dragons absolutely everywhere.
If you want early access to new lore, stories, naming guides, posters, and occasional chaos from behind the scenes, join the Cultivating Dragons mailing scrolls.
No spam. No nonsense. Just magic, myth, and worldbuilding delivered straight to you.
